Picture a universe without straight lines, where energy radiates from every object, and you begin to get an idea of the world of artist Sasha Rubel. Her work has been accepted into the prestigious Communication Arts Illustration annual, as well as the illustration annual for the Society of Illustrators. A full-time artist, Rubel has exhibited artwork in numerous juried shows and gallery exhibitions. Exhibitions include group shows in the New Yorker Magazine Gallery, and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum in Schaumburg, IL.
Rubel's trademark character, Greta, a fun-loving yet mysterious bon vivant, stands out with her own brand of style, irreverence and lust for life. Greta is a guileless creature, never losing her aplomb (or her bright red fluttering scarves).
Three commissioned artworks are featured in a full-color gift book 21st Century Dog: A Visionary Compendium (Stewart Tabori & Chang, 2000. Editor: Michael J. Rosen). Her work from the book was part of a travelling show "Future Dog", sponsored by the AKC Museum of the Dog, St. Louis, MO. Her painting "Dogs Playing Computer Poker" is part of the museum's permanent collection.
In March 2002 her painting "Knockout" was chosen for an exhibit at the Museum of American Illustration in New York commemorating the Society of Illustrators' 100th Anniversary. The painting was included in their annual book of the year's best illustration.
She received the Benefactor's Prize in August 1997 from noted artist Philip Pearlstein for the painting "Vroom!" at the 10th Annual Northern National Juried Art Exhibition in Rhinelander, WI. Sasha has also exhibited in shows juried by Lucinda Barnes, Curator of Collections for the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago; Dr. Margaret Burroughs, founder, Du Sable Museum, Chicago; and artists Don Baum and Mati Maldre.
Sasha was awarded a grant for a 4-week painting residency at the Vermont Studio Center from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago Alumni Association, as well as two grants from the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs. Her work has been featured in the Communication Arts Illustration Annual and twice appeared on covers of Footlights magazine.
Sasha has a Master's from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the University of Wisconsin at Madison.
